Project TALSINKIFIX: Helsinki-Tallinn fixed link pre-feasibility study

Final report of the TALSINKIFIX project was presented on Wednesday February 11th 2015 in Helsinki. TALSINKIFIX project partners are Harju County Government, City of Helsinki, City of Tallinn and Femern belt Development fund. Project is part financed by EUSBSR Seed Money Facility.

Helsinki-Tallinn fixed link pre-feasibility study was compiled by consultants representing international company Sweco group: Sweco Project AS, Vealeidja OÜ and Finantsakadeemia OÜ.

Project TALSINKIFIX has aimed to evaluate feasibility and viability of the Helsinki-Tallinn fixed link, the rail tunnel to connect Finland and Estonia. The aim of the project has been to answer is it justified to carry out a full scale feasibility study and to start technical planning of this mega project. This pre-feasibility study is part-financed by the EUBSR Seed Money Facility. Possible future tunnel project will complete the development of a transport corridor along one of the Trans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T) core network corridors in the Baltic Sea Region. The project has aimed to investigate the economic and social development potential of Helsinki-Tallinn fixed link. TALSINKIFIX has looked at socio-economic benefits and challenges related to the construction of a fixed link, as well as outlined how to integrate the fixed link to existing transport networks in both countries.
